    Abstract. Verkuyl’s work On the compositional nature of the aspects appeared as a dissertation in and was published a year later (Verkuyl ). It was to turn into a cornerstone in the development of aspectology. The linguistic analysis in it is based on the author’s mother tongue, Dutch, but the English translation equivalents supplied throughout show that the regularities revealed Die Vorgeschichte des slavischen Aoristsystems proposes a new look on the paradigmatic organization of the finite verb in Proto-Slavic.
